MULCH SOIL ENRICHMENT MATERIAL AT REASONABLE RATES
With sandy soils on the West Coast, chipped garden material improves soil and acts as a cover mulch to retain moisture and reduce water use. Use it for pathways or turn it into compost for soil enrichment. Nurseries, gardeners, farmers and landowners can take advantage of this valuable material for only R16.10/m³, as per current applicable tariffs. Chipped garden material can be collected at Vredenburg and Langebaan disposal sites. Pay at any municipal enquiry office and bring own transport for collection and transportation of chipped material.
INCENTIVE PROJECT ENCOURAGES LOWER-INCOME AREAS TO PARTICIPATE IN RECYCLING
In Saldanha Bay Municipality, a new initiative encourages residents in lower-income areas to participate in recycling by feeding hungry schoolchildren in return. By Hugh Tyrrell*
Since it began in 2016, the kerbside recycling collection service operated by Saldanha Bay Local Municipality has been running well in middle and upper-income suburbs. Each week, householders put out their recyclable materials in a clear bag (provided free by the municipality), which is picked up on the same day as refuse removals. Participation by householders in these suburbs has reached over 40%. This is in line with international research showing that higher income and education corresponds with greater environmental awareness and action, including recycling. In the lower-income suburbs of the the municipality, the recycling participation rate is below 15%. Many of those who do not participate, however, would understand the value of recyclable packaging materials, as they form part of the purchase price of groceries and other items they buy. There is reasonable reluctance to part with their recyclables without some form of compensation in return.

What can be recycled and must go into the clear bag?
✔ Plastic milk/drinks bottles and other containers

What can’t be recycled and must go into the bin?
✗ Food waste, scraps and peelings

Can I recycle broken glass or cups or window glass?
No – no other glass except bottles can be put out for recycling.
What must I do with cardboard boxes?
Flatten cardboard boxes and place beside wheelie-bin
Are the lids from plastic bottles recyclable?
Bottles with their tops on keep the plastic bottles full of air. This takes up a lot of space in the bags and on the collection vehicles. Please take the tops off and squeeze plastic bottles flat. The caps can then be added in with the recyclables, but not left on the bottles. Unfortunately, corks are not recyclable.
What about pizza boxes and food packaging?
All paper, cardboard or plastic containers will be recycled. However, please remove excess food before placing the paper, cardboard or plastic container in recycling bag.
Should I rinse out milk bottles first?
It is not absolutely necessary to rinse bottles, but the bottles must be emptied of remaining liquid before placing the bottle in the recycling bag.
Can I put garden refuse into the clear bag?
No – garden refuse must be taken to the Vredenburg landfill site.
What about old containers for motor oil, paints, solvents or other hazardous chemicals?
These can’t be recycled and must be taken to the Vredenburg landfill site for storage/containment after which the items will be disposed of at a registered hazardous waste management facility on a quarterly
basis.
What must I do with my bag of recyclables?
Place your bag of recyclables next to your wheelie-bin for collection on refuse removal day.
When must I put my bag of recyclables out for collection?
On the same day as your refuse is collected.
How do I get a new clear bag for my recyclables?
You can also ask at your nearest municipal office with your rates bill. Remember to take your rates account with you.
Where does my bag of recyclables go after its been collected?
Your recyclables are taken to a special materials recovery facility at the Vredenburg landfill site where the different materials such as plastic, paper, tins, etc are sorted and baled for transport to reprocessing plants in Cape Town.
Why is the recycling programme phased over three years?
Municipal budget restrictions can only afford one roll-out per year.
Why was Langebaan chosen first?
Langebaan residents have been requesting it in their IDPs (Integrated Development Plans) for a number of years. The Councillors and residents have been very keen to have the system introduced.
When will free recycling collections be rolled out in the other areas of Saldanha?
Phase Two from 4 September 2017: Vredenburg/ Paternoster/ Jacobsbaai/ Hopefield Phase Three in April 2018 (provisional date): St Helena and Saldanha.
What about the informal settlement areas – will they be getting recycling too?
Recycling swop shops are planned to be rolled out in various informal settlements in the Saldanha Bay Municipality. A swop shop (often a refurbished shipping container) is where residents, especially children, an bring and swop recyclable items they have gathered for school accessories, clothes, toiletries, etc.
Are business also included in the free kerbside collection programme?
No. Businesses and restaurants must make their own recycling arrangements with contractors of their choice or contact the municipal recycling contractor Wastegro on 082 3353 177.
E-Waste accepted for Recycling
Saldanha Bay Municipality has made provision for and accepts e-waste for recycling at the Vredenburg Landfill site. E-waste includes (electronic) items such as televisions, computers, refrigerators, stoves etc.
This facility is only for the use of the general public, not businesses. All e-waste accumulated by businesses must be recycled via e-waste recycling companies.
