Sounding the Alarm: Saving Lives with further Smoke Detector Rollout in Saldanha Bay MUNICIPALITY
The Saldanha Bay Municipality has taken a bold step forward in enhancing fire safety and protecting its most vulnerable communities. Thanks to a generous Capacity Grant from the Western Cape Department of Local Government, through its Directorate for Disaster Management Services, a total of 1,990 smoke alarms have been procured as part of a life-saving initiative. These steps are a continuation and follow-up on investment of an existing programme within the municipality.
This proactive programme forms part of a broader fire prevention strategy first introduced in 2016 by Minister Anton Bredell. Spearheaded by the Western Cape Fire and Rescue Services, the smoke alarm initiative aims to significantly reduce the number of fire-related injuries and fatalities in high-risk communities by providing an essential early warning mechanism.
The official handover of the smoke alarms took place on 7 May 2025 at the Central Fire Station outside Saldanha. The event was attended by members of the Public Safety Management team, Saldanha Bay Fire and Rescue personnel, and delegates from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. Mr Etienne du Toit, Deputy Director for Fire and Rescue Services at the Department of Local Government, facilitated the formal handover and elaborated on the objectives of the initiative.
Saldanha Bay Municipality’s Chief Fire Officer, Ms Ann Supra-Vertue, warmly welcomed the attendees and opened the proceedings, while Mr Mario Jacobs, Senior Manager: Public Safety, delivered the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the municipality.
The 1,990 smoke alarms funded by the grant are scheduled for installation in the communities of Middelpos in Saldanha, George Kerridge in Vredenburg, and Nkanini in Laingville. Beyond the physical installation, the initiative includes essential fire awareness and safety education, ensuring residents are equipped with knowledge to prevent and respond to fire incidents effectively. It is also notable that Ward Councillors will accompany the Fire and Rescue personnel during the installation of the smoke alarms to help ensure and support the successful completion thereof.
“The smoke alarm initiative is about more than the actual alarms, as the installation process is accompanied by fire awareness and safety training in those communities. This ultimately contributes to fire safety behavioural change, helping to keep people safe.”
Smoke alarms provide critical early warnings, allowing residents precious extra moments to escape. Studies show that quick detection leads to faster response and improved chances of survival. The true danger in most home fires lies in the smoke.
Contrary to popular belief, sleeping individuals do not wake up from the smell of smoke. Instead, the toxic fumes can cause deeper unconsciousness and lead to fatalities. These new smoke alarms are designed to rouse people before it is too late.
This initiative reaffirms the municipality’s commitment to protecting lives and promoting a culture of safety in all its communities.
